The Bluff Marine Reserve
The Bluff Coastline is undoubtedly a beautiful
and special stretch of the KZN Coast. It is
unique from a point of view that it is the only
notable peninsula and the only bluff on the
entire African coastline. It deserves special
care. The Bluff coastline is habitat to a wide
variety on delicate marine life that is being
threatened by the indiscriminate abuse of
humans, principally by pollution, fishing, and
anti social behaviour.

The proposal is to restore some natural
order and create some sustainable control
mechanisms to protect this environment
from the abuse it is currently experiencing
before it is destroyed and lost forever.

The proposal is to create a Marine Reserve
from the Bluff Headland to Anstey’s Beach
initially where the Marine Reserve will be
maintained by Reserve Officers empowered
to uphold the agreed guidelines for the
Marine Reserves management. The concept
of the Marine Reserve is to ensure the
sustainable use of the coastline for everyone’
s benefit in the long term.

Once the agreed management guidelines for
the Marine Reserve are agreed a legislated
then they will be communicated to all who
use the reserve to observe and abide by.

Benefits:
•        The coastline and its fragile eco
systems will enjoy a better chance of survival.
•        The people using and enjoying the
coastline will be educated on how to care for
this precious asset.
•        It could become a revenue generating
asset for Durban as a Tourist Attraction.
•        The coastline can be enjoyed by all in a
sustainable manner.
